For this edition of The Stack, we’re reviewing viewer submitted comics. First up is Brian Andersen’s debut issue of So Super Duper. This comic book is about a super hero who might be gay but he doesn’t know it. We think it’s worth a look. Then we check out Warlash #0 from Asylum Press, which we think feels like Judge Dredd meets zombies. And finally we review Blood’s Own #1 from Antidote Comics. We’re a little critical of this comic, but we definitely enjoyed it and think it’s worth picking up. We’re looking forward to the second issue. See more from Antidote Comics at Antidotecomics.com Check out the other issues at SoSuperDuper.com and Warlash.com. In our panel discussion we talk about whether comics should be free. Alex thinks so. Watch and find out why.

I enjoy comic books. I enjoyed the newly released book “You Have A College Degree, Now What?” What did everyone else think of it?”

Itunes for comics would be a great idea. The hardest part is finding issues you want from the back catalogue in my opinion… But then again, that would really screw over the collectors. What would a first issue be worth online?

00:11 to 00:15 the camera moves slightly to the left, making it look like the table is moving to the right, because they have a green-screen behind them.

one thing i never understood was how comics can be so expensive and still have an advert every two pages. either get rid of the ads or charge the advertisers more and lower the retail price.

free comics is a bad idea altogther

I watch comic reviews on YouTube and read Scott Tipton’s Comics 101, but I only read (free and legal) webcomics. Digital distribution, including a humongous backlog to catch up on what I’ve missed, is the only way to get me into “mainstream” comics.
That said, CBR is something for you physical folks. Webcomics pace their page releases. Singles could be sold as a way to read an issue all at once while the rest of us are only getting a page every couple days.

Having official digital copies going around can’t help, in spite of the Itunes experience. If you remember, that’s what Marvel tried to do with Ultimate X-Men and Ultimate Spiderman, and it didn’t quite work.
I enjoyed the panel discussion. Both that and the speedround are enjoyable, so do whatever you feel like doing, and alternate at will.
Thanks once more for videoing and sharing. Kudos on the great vids.

I’m sorry, but I think you’re being ridiculous, Alex. If people got individual issues for free, I doubt most would bother to buy the trades.
Also, I think you underestimate the popularity of digital comics (or comicscans) in the Net, Justin. Just about everything has been scanned and is readily available, and while that is great for the comic fans living outside the States, it can’t be good for the publishers.

Not me. I need the tangible books.

Bring back the Speedround

Guys, I think you’re taking them a little too literal. What if 4 issue books were printed in trade, and the first two issues were free? The second two could only be bought in the trade along with the first two as wlel, of course? That’s just off the top of my head. They’re suggesting the publishers try to make more off of the trades, rather than to just keep jacking up the prices on the issue releases. At least that is what I heard.

Agreed, I’d pay a buck for a digital copy as opposed to 3 or 4 for a paper. They’re both going to sit and never be touched again after I’ve read them anyway. Unless they’re amazing, in which case I’d get the paper version anyway. I just expect comics to someday become a print on demand thing for the msot part, aside from the pockets of resistance that is expected with any change. But I could be wrong. ^_^ I was wrong one time before. =P

I resisted the idea of digital comics for a long time. But the more I mess with it, the more I like it. The technology can be improved a little bit and new things could be added to the comic book experience online (e.g. music?). Right now, I think there is too much resistance to it. And most digital comics are being used as promotional material. You’ll rarely find an entire arc in the current digital comic medium. It would be nice to pay a $1 for a single issue for a digital comic.

That’s exactly what would happen.
January 26th, 2012 at 8:31 am
I know price sucks but what i do is collect in books and read the trades they are more affordable.
January 26th, 2012 at 9:03 am
It’s just not economical to make them so expensive, it’s just cause of inflation. We need to consider true profit gain from this situation
January 26th, 2012 at 9:22 am
and I think comic books should go back to being under $2
$4or X-men?! That’s crazy!
January 26th, 2012 at 9:34 am
It’s really annoying listen to the offshot comments these guys make, all the lame sarcasm Pete makes…
January 26th, 2012 at 9:50 am
If comics were free, I would put everything on my pull list and there would be no need for me to buy any trades whatsoever because I would have everything, absolutely free. That’s probably the dumbest idea I’ve ever heard.
January 26th, 2012 at 10:04 am
then we would only have review on the punisher and wolverine :/
January 26th, 2012 at 11:03 am
I think the show should be hosted by Pete and two Pete clones!
January 26th, 2012 at 11:46 am
I don’t think comics should be free. While I’m sure there are a lot of people who like to buy trades, I’m sure that there are also a good number of fans who like their single issues. I’m one of those people. I like my monthly comics. The only time I buy trades are for things I can’t find in my comic shop.
January 26th, 2012 at 12:45 pm
I would buy more comics if they where cheaper. Here they cost 5 times more the dollar price because of import. So, yeah, price is an issue.
I enjoy more the monthly than the weekly comics. In a monthly issue there are less cliffhangers which am no real fan of and you get more comic for you money.

I don’t think the singles should be free but cheaper, like $1 or .25.
